Sweet and hopeful and innocent (and yet, at the same time not so innocent as they boys discover each other--and discover themselves through each other) and so much of what young first love is all about.
In some ways I appreciated that it began with the present-day prologue before flashing back to when the boys met in the early 80's--it let me relax and enjoy the story because I was completely assured that no matter what they went through, they would indeed end up together.
However, I also didn't feel like I got to know the characters as well as I would have liked, and I wonder if it isn't because the whole story is a flashback. Perhaps that's just me, though.
Jack's character fascinates me, how he starts off being so admiring of the out students on his campus and the bravery it takes for them to live like that, and then he turns into a fantastically brave person in order to save his relationship. I loved that.
Wonderful story, very sweet.
