I'm starting [b:Little House on the Prairie|77767|Little House on the Prairie (Little House, #2)|Laura Ingalls Wilder|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1344695948s/77767.jpg|2884161] with my students today, and found out that they read this book last year. To help them with the transition to book 2, I figured I'd better read book 1 as well.
I found it to be as delightful as Little House on the Prairie in the depth of detail given about everyday life so long ago. The graphic descriptions of butchering the hog and preparing it and various other animals for food for the winter disturbed me quite a bit (likely because I'm a vegetarian, but still I'd imagine they could also disturb young children) but the rest of the story was entertaining and frequently amusing.
I honestly laughed out loud at the scene with the young boys sneaking out to go sledding and accidentally bringing the pig down the hill with them. Also delightful were the scenes with Ma, Laura and the bear they thought was their cow, Pa and the stump he thought was a bear, the little boy who cried wolf until he got horribly stung.
I'm glad I read this, it's made me actually look forward to getting to read Little House on the Prairie again.
